Limited Edition Print - 150
Captured in the quiet breath before daybreak, this image was made in the far northern arm of Kaikiekie / Bradshaw Sound, where night still lingered and the first hint of morning barely touched the sky. The rain had eased moments earlier, and the water lay perfectly still, holding the dark shapes of hills and cloud like a polished mirror. From the stern of the boat, I set the tripod and let the exposure stretch, the vessel drifting almost imperceptibly on its anchor. That subtle movement softened the scene into something painterly, blurring reflection and reality into a horizon that seemed to dissolve into itself — a moment suspended between darkness and light, where Fiordland revealed its quiet, breathing calm.

Getting to Bradshaw Sound is less of a trip and more of a logistical marathon, especially when you live in Auckland. It’s not somewhere you casually “drop in” to. It requires commitment, and a healthy respect for timetables. First, a flight to Queenstown. Then a bus to Manapōuri. Then a boat across the lake to the Manapōuri Hydro Power Station. Then another bus weaves through one of the most remote roads in New Zealand to Deep Cove in Dusky Sound. And just when you think you’ve arrived, another boat, heading even deeper into Fiordland toward Bradshaw Sound. By the end of it, you’re not entirely sure what day it is, but you’re certain you’ve left the normality well and truly behind.
I hadn’t planned to chase a sunrise photoshoot on the first morning. After a day of Fiordland doing what Fiordland does best, rain, mist, and low cloud, the forecast promised something rare: a break. So I set an alarm, pulled on extra layers against the midwinter cold, and stood on deck in the dark, waiting for the first hint that night was about to loosen its grip.
When it came, it came quietly. A thin line of light, then another. Tripod out, camera set, and a series of long exposures followed, some too soft, some too bright, while the boat swung gently on its anchor, just enough to turn sharp edges into something more painterly.
And then it happened. The rain thinned, the mist began to lift, and distant clouds started to drift across the sound. In places, the water turned to glass, reflecting hills and sky into a near-perfect mirror. The day was waking up. The anchor would lift soon. But for a brief moment, Fiordland held still, and that was enough.
Location:
Kaikiekie / Bradshaw Sound — Reached via the remote waters of Doubtful Sound, Kaikiekie / Bradshaw Sound lies deep within Fiordland’s wild southwest, where steep forested walls plunge into dark, glassy water. Shaped by glaciers and softened by mist, it feels timeless and untouched, a quiet corridor of mountains, cloud, and reflection. Far from roads and crowds, it captures the raw, moody spirit of Fiordland — a place defined by scale, stillness, and solitude.
