Limited Edition Print - 150
Photographed in the fragile pause between seasons, as the light turned gold at the close of an autumn day and a snow-laden storm began to gather. For a brief moment, warmth and winter collided, golden sunlight brushing the land just as the threat of snow crept in. The tussock grasses around Lake Angelus glowed with renewed life, their colour burning brightly before being swallowed by sleet and, later that night, buried beneath snow. The window was narrow, the change inevitable, a fleeting, luminous moment suspended between calm and coming cold

I hadn’t set out for Lake Angelus. The plan was the Hinapouri Tarns beyond, hidden beneath Angelus Peak in the Nelson Lakes, the sort of place that gets overlooked because Lake Angelus steals all the attention. On this trip Angelus was only ever meant to be a waypoint.
But somewhere along the Robert Ridge, the weather began to turn. Fast. Cold. The pack was heavy, tent, sleeping bag, and more camera gear than sense and with every step, the margin for error shrank. The clouds lowered, the wind picked up to a gale, and the decision stopped being optional. Lake Angelus it was.
The hut was full. Of course it was. So I pitched the tent, cooked a quick dinner, and finally did the thing I’d been climbing five hours to do, take photographs. The light didn’t last long. It never does.
As soon as it faded, the snow arrived. Proper snow. The kind that fills the dark and softens every sound. Lying there later, in a tent, high in the mountains, in the middle of a snow storm, I realised I’d accidentally ticked off a small, childhood dream.
Not a bad trade for a change of plans.
Location
Lake Angelus (Māori: Rotomaninitua) is a high-alpine tarn in Nelson Lakes National Park, set at 1,650 metres within a rocky glacial basin. Surrounded by alpine peaks, including Mount Angelus, the lake is often frozen from late autumn through spring. Reached by a challenging 12-kilometre hike from the Mount Robert track, it is a remote and exposed environment, defined by altitude, weather, and rugged terrain.
