Limited Edition Print - 150
Captured in that fleeting moment when day has well and truly gone and the pitch darkness of the moonless night is very close, the light of the sun momentarily bounces off the stratosphere and transforms the landscape into something otherworldly exposing the even hardest to find details. The long exposure draws out the detail of the landscape and illustrates the wild rush of the Hooker River as it frantically escapes the Mueller Glacier, turning motion into artistry. Anchoring the scene, the snow-crowned peak of Mount Sefton rises with quiet majesty — a reminder of both permanence and power. It’s a place where light, speed, and scale collide, leaving you with more than just an image — it’s a moving experience captured by still photography

One doesn’t just turn up, jump out of your nice heated car seat and snap the image that makes you go wow. But having said that it can on a very rear moment happen when one is in the right place at the right time and has a camera in hand with the right lens attached, Oh and plus a battery that has some charge in it. But how often is that?
This wasn’t one of those zen-like, sit-cross-legged, ‘I found myself in nature’ moments. Nope. It was day five of a six-day mission at White Horse Campground, Mount Cook — basically a marathon of walking, light-chasing, and pretending I knew what I was doing with a camera. My personal definition of heaven.
On this particular evening I was racing back to camp before it got too dark and too cold (because a moonless night in the Hooker Valley isn’t romantic — it’s just pitch black and freezing). Crossing the last swing bridge, the light suddenly flipped into that magical after-dusk glow — the kind that makes you yell ‘don’t you dare fade!’ I spun on a dime and scrambled through scrub, leapt over boulders, and finally balanced on a slippery rock above the icy torrent of the Hooker River with the tripod half mounted in the current and half on a rock.
At that point, I was either going to be swept away and end up as an ‘unexplained mystery’ on a travel blog… or maybe, just maybe, snag a keeper shot.
Spoiler: creativity lost to survival. Darkness fell, fingers froze, and I crawled back to camp with the grace of a land locked walrus, comforted only by a hot cup of tea and the warm cocoon of my teardrop caravan bed.
Days later in Ophir, bragging to friends and half-expecting nothing but a card of blurry disasters, I found it. Out of 20 long exposures shot in that 45 minutes, one image leapt off the screen and shouted: ‘Yes. That’s the one.’ Sometimes near-death scrambles pay off.
